Performing utilization and disability chart reviews on behalf of insurance companies is a great way for a physician to supplement their clinical income – a very nice physician side gig. The work is interesting and a clinician’s current skillset is easily transferrable. Chart reviews are typically performed from home and what one learns while performing chart reviews will often make one a better doctor for their patients. Gaining experience performing chart reviews as a 1099 independent contractor can also give physicians a leg up when looking to transition to a part-time or full-time W-2 medical director role at a disability or health insurance company.
The majority of chart reviews are for utilization review. Utilization reviews are typically requested by health, workers’ compensation and automobile insurance companies to obtain a physician’s opinion (with rationale) for whether a particular provider visit, test, medication, procedure, etc. meets the medical necessity requirements of the insurance policy in question. Disability chart reviews are performed on behalf of disability insurance companies. In disability reviews, the physician is asked to opine if the medical records provided to the reviewing physicians support or do not support disability of the insured under the terms of the applicable disability insurance policy. Disability reviews typically pay better than utilization reviews.
For various reasons, insurance companies often hire intermediary companies (such as independent review organizations – IROs) to contract with the physicians who will perform the file reviews. Simply, IROs hire physicians to perform Utilization Chart Reviews and/or Disability Chart Reviews, typically from home. This post contains a list of over 100 such work-from-home file review referral sources for physicians. Where possible and available, we have also included a direct link to apply to join the organization’s panel of physicians. This information and link are in red.
Note that many of the organizations listed in this publication also utilize contract physicians for additional side gigs such as independent medical examinations (IMEs), medical-legal chart reviews, and expert witness assignments.
Chart review referral sources are generally looking for physicians who are: (1) Board Certified (2) Licensed (3) In Active Clinical Practice (How much practice is required will vary by referral source) (4) physically present in the United States and (5) Have a Clean Disciplinary Record.
The physician specialties sought by file review referral sources vary widely based on the needs of their clients.
The keys to building a large practice performing file reviews are: (1) Being responsive and meeting deadlines and (2) Performing high quality reviews which produce clear and well-supported written opinions.
